Low-poly challenge

This week I decided to challenge myself.

While watching the new CG Cookie class ("Getting Started with 3D Modeling & Blender"), I started thinking about the homework. Since it was an introductory class, the task was to create a scene using only simple shapes. But I thought, "I'm more advanced than that, surely. How far could I push this idea...?"

The result of this introspection is a set of rules I decided to follow. Rule number one: You don't talk about the Edit mode. Rule number two: You forget that Edit mode exists. Rule number three: Simple shapes are your friends. You may use Plane, Cube, IcoSphere, Cylinder, and Torus. That's it. Now go out and play.

And I have to say that the playtime was most satisfying and enjoyable. Who would have thought that putting together tiny pieces of imaginary furniture would be so much fun? Or take so much time. Seriously, I could have done two semi-realistic scenes in the time it took me to come up with this. I'm still not sure what I spent so much time on. Probably colour-picking. And scaling everything to match perfectly. And the parquetry. Oh yeah, definitely the parquetry. (It is made of six hundred and fifty-seven pieces. 657! That was an evening well spent.)

The painting was also interesting to make. It didn't turn out as well as I hoped—for the pattern to work, parts of the planes would have to stick out of the frame—but I'd call it decent enough. If you are into that sort of thing. I'm not.

Erm... Yeah. So, that's that. Not sure what else to write about, so I'll wrap it up exceptionally early this time. Next week I'll either do another exercise, create a few more animations, or have a look at the current CG Challenge (mysterious portal). I'd love to make a Star Gate tribute but I'm afraid it would be against the rules (IPs and stuff). So I'll see if I get inspired on ArtStation—if not, I'll stick with my first two options. I'm starting to have more ideas for what to create than I have time to work on. But let's not complain about that, shall we?

EDIT: I submitted the homework before this post went live. One of the responses was that it would be great if the computer had this image on screen. So, I give you: the Screen-ception.
